Biography
A great saxophone performer, Miguel De Caro brings a unique contribution to the argentina popular music- a mix of tango-jazz fusion; a perfect equilibrium between tradition and innovation. His music comes from the fascinating mix of traditional Tango (the “dirty-lowdown ‘hood” (arrabalero) spirit of the Buenos Aires music), and the sonorities, openness and freedom qualities of Jazz and World Music.
Growing up in a family with a Tango music lineage, and after finishing his academic studies at the age of 18, Miguel started to teach music. At the same time, his increasing interest in B.A. popular music made him a constant attendant of the jam sessions held at the emblematic Británico Bar (a kind of "Minton's" for tango) in San Telmo. There he got to play with the cream of the crop in sessions where (like in the old jazz days) he who couldn't follow the old masters' pace was automatically rejected. This training gives him the "chops" required to add to his own music the "down to earth" touch that is the landmark of any real life working musician.
Between 1991 and 1995 he attended several clinics held in B.A. by the Berklee College of Music.
After some years spent as a session player in radio and TV shows, Miguel devoted his entire time to his own project in the early 80's.
Well known in Argentina, Miguel De Caro has been on numerous television and radio shows all across the country. He has appeared on the stages of National Theaters such as San Martín and Alvear. He has been part of the traditional BA Tango Festival in Buenos Aires in 2004, 2006, 2007 2016 and 2019 editions, among other important official events.
Among other distinctions, De Caro has been nominated for the 1993 ACE award (The National Show Critics' Prize) for his first recorded work "Saxotangueando", sharing the pool with Astor Piazzolla and Raúl Garello. He was also nominated for the 1995 Estrella de Mar award in the "best live show" category, this time alongside singer Susana Rinaldi and trumpeter Fats Fernández.
Miguel De Caro was elected, in 1997, by the Placido Domingo Foundation to compose a tune in honour to the great tenor in the occasion of the 25º anniversary of his first performance at the Colon Theater. The song was published by the EMI Record Label and was played in a dinner gala attended by the honoree.
Besides his continuous gigs, and his teaching agenda (for which he is requested and recognized as an authority in the field), Miguel De Caro's showed his talent overseas. He has visited Brazil, Switzerland and Italy with great success in his performances in theaters, jazz clubs and "milongas" in Porto Alegre (Brazil), Zürich, Bern and Locarno (Switzerland) and Massa Carrara, Florencia and Bologna (Italy).
